Dr. J.D. Carlson was a distinguished pastor and radio broadcaster, well known for concluding his weekday programs with "Keep looking up!" In 1959, Dr. Carlson set out for his first overseas visit. It changed his lifeand the lives of thousands more. Journeying through countries such as Haiti, Korea, Vietnam and India, Joe was shocked by the poverty he encountered. He was especially moved by the desperate plight of countless orphan children, who struggled to survive and had little hope for their future. The Mission To Children was born.
The Mission To Children was incorporated in Canada (1963) and the United States (1971). With offices in Calgary, AB and Glendale, CA, it also became known informally as International Christian Ministries of the Mission To Children. Over the years, the Mission To Children established its ministry of radio teaching and worldwide care.

In January of 2000, the Mission To Children welcomed Dr. John Garmo as its third Chief Executive. "Skip," as friends know him, is a teacher, writer, and world Christian. Under his leadership, the ministry continues teaching adults and training children to "keep looking up" and reaching out.
Skip's long-time involvement in the Christian para-church ministry has enabled Mission To Children to develop into a mature charity. He served on the board of Open Doors USA, worked with Mission Aviation Fellowship, and Ministry Partners.
During the past three years, Skip has been invited to countries such as Liberia, Bolivia, Romania, Lithuania, and Jordan to facilitate character training seminars, building Christlike character into children and the adults who influence them.
Skip is the father of three and son to the late missionary, Bud Garmo (of New Tribes Mission). He currently resides in California with his wife, Jan.
