Outreach Serves Displaced Families on Island Near Rajahmundry

Deevena Lanka is a small island in Rajahmundry, India, situated in the middle of the Godavari River.

It is “home” to displaced flood victims—impoverished and desperate for a place to live. These people survive by catching fish, weaving fishing nets, and collecting coins that travelers toss from the bridge overhead for good luck. There is no electricity, running water, or school on the island, and it’s only reachable by boat.

The residents are able to live there for free, but every time a cyclone or flood strikes, they are forced to leave. They wait in their boats for the disaster to cease; and once they return, they are faced with the daunting task of rebuilding ruined huts.

Is anyone hidden from the love of God?

As you can imagine Deevena Lanka rarely receives visitors. So when our Indian ministry partners offered to host a Christmas Dinner Outreach on the island, the residents thought it was a joke! They would soon be pleasantly surprised by the wonderful event arranged specifically for them.

Our partners then traveled across the river to this community in order to serve food and provide gifts of kerosene lamps, New Testament Bibles, and the love of Christ in their hearts. They sang songs with the people, presented the Christmas story and Gospel message, and taught character qualities that demonstrate Christlikeness. Afterward, some of the ministry leaders visited families in their huts and prayed for them.

“Deevena Lanka” means “Blessed Island.” Indeed, with the help of your prayers and donations, around 800 people received a blessing they will never forget—the tangible love of Christ!
